£12,000 boost for Cornwall wheelchair basketball club
Cornwall Cougars Wheelchair Basketball Club has secured £12,000 worth of funding from two leading sport organisations to fund and develop outreach basketball clubs for young people, with and without disabilities, in the Truro and Camborne areas.
Sported, the UK’s largest Sport for Development charity, has awarded Cornwall Cougars a grant of £2,000 towards the purchase of specialist wheelchairs for those young people that do not own their own.
Sported is a free membership organisation which provides funding and business support to grassroots sports groups which reduce barriers to participation for marginalised groups.
As a Sported member, Cornwall Cougars has not only been able to benefit from a grant, but following support from the charity, the group has successfully bid for an additional £10,000 grant from Sport England’s ‘Get Equipped’ programme to fund equipment and training for the outreach clubs.

Cornwall Cougars Wheelchair Basketball Club has only been in operation for little more than a year, but already has a competitive team travelling the country to play in a wheelchair basketball league and operates several outreach clubs.
The aim of the outreach clubs is to give young people with and without disabilities an opportunity to play a new sport together, break down barriers and bring young people together that would not normally be able to participate.
All equipment, including the sports specific wheelchairs, is provided and the long-term vision is to train young people and volunteers as coaches, enabling the outreach clubs to expand across the whole of Cornwall. The first of Cornwall Cougars’ outreach clubs is planned to open at Camborne Science International Academy shortly.
Andy Care, Cornwall Cougars Secretary, said: “We are utterly delighted to have been successful with these funding applications. The sports wheelchairs are expensive and we only have a limited number, now we’ll be able to get more chairs and equipment to use for our new outreach clubs. A big thank you to Sported for their help and support.”
Hannah Colston, South West Regional Manager at Sported, said: “Andy Care and his team of volunteers at Cornwall Cougars Wheelchair Basketball Club are incredibly driven and passionate about their sport.
"A lack of the right equipment will no longer be a barrier for young people to get involved with the sport. The aim is to keep expanding the outreach clubs across Cornwall so more and more young people have the opportunity to play basketball, make friends and enjoy the sport together.”
