230 flower species at annual count
AFTER torrential rain and chilly weather many gardens will be looking bare; but not the famous Abbey Garden on Tresco, where 230 different species of flowering plants in bloom have just been recorded.
The annual flower count, which takes place in the first few weeks of the new year, has been carried out for more than 150 years.

The latest tally, on January 2, which was led by Abbey Garden's head gardener, Andrew Lawson and joined by island guests, counted exotic blooms including Aloe Arborescens from South Africa, Angel's Trumpet (Brugmansia Sanguinea) from Peru and Proteas from South Africa.
Tresco, the second biggest island in the Isles of Scilly, is blessed by a mild climate meaning sub-tropical plants bloom all year-round.

Mr Lawson said: "The annual flower count is always an eagerly anticipated event on the garden's calendar. Despite the recent rain of late, we have seen another successful count – comparable to that of last year. There definitely won't be any other gardens in the country that can say they have that many species of plant in flower outdoors."
