6,000 in call for Cornwall re-think
A "glorious revolution" has exploded in Cornwall where nearly 6,000 people have forced contentious plans for a public/private sector union back into the debating chamber.
In less than three weeks, a petition declaring outright opposition to Cornwall Council joining forces with a private firm to create an independent enterprise has roared through a crucial threshold.

Independent councillor Andrew Wallis said it was a measure of the unease Cornish people felt over the deal which would mean council core services run by the new firm.
He called on council leader Alec Robertson and Chief Executive Kevin Lavery to take note of the mood on the streets.

"People often sit back and just get on with their lives," he said.
"But when something like this happens they realise that they have got to get up and man the barricades to fight against privatisation.
"It's the glorious revolution."
In August, an extraordinary meeting of the cabinet of Cornwall Council rubber stamped proposals to set up an independent joint venture with a private firm.
The new company would run a myriad of services for Cornwall Council and in theory they would be able to bid for work from other organisations.
Council chiefs say the £800 million contract could save the authority at least £2.5 million a year.
But opposition to the deal – and the way it was forced through despite most councillors voting against it – has been fierce.

“It appears I have to be careful what I post and link to as another story vanished after I responded to Big_ger with some vital information from a government website that records can be accessed from.
So with that in mind all I would like to say is congratulations Corrnwall for moving on this, but we still have 2 months before the official ending of the petition so keep signing as at least 100,000 or so people must see the sense in this not happening and that really would hit it home democratically as something the people don't want.”

“Don't stop signing if you have not yet. 5,000 signatures is not the end but the beginning its vital campaigners keep the pressure up until this policy is stopped.
3986 on the online version sounds like at least 6,000 total but I'am sure many more petitions have not been handed in to Cornwall Council or Cllr Wallis so get them in and keep collected in your neighbourhoods.

“A brilliant example of people power standing up against the so called "democratic process" of local government. Robertson should resign immediately, as his Cabinet is trying to impose their own personal interests over the wishes of the rest of the Council and the electorate. Even if the 2.5m a year savings are achieved, and I've no idea how they calculated that figure, it would still take 320 years to realise the savings based on a contract of £800m - good economics or what?

“A peaceful revolution is long overdue, the unelected officers at Lys Kernow have brought democracy to its knees and their unwanted excessea compound as their grip on power increases.
However ther is always a tipping point when the people affected are pushed too far, I wager that the people of Cornwall are now at that point so let battle commence.”
