Acclaimed tenor returns home to record CD in aid of RNLI
Two of Cornwall’s best-loved songs have been recorded by an international opera star to raise funds for the lifeboat service.
Trelawny and The Floral Dance have been brought together on a special CD celebrating the combined talents of Helston Town Band and John Treleaven.
The acclaimed Porthleven-born tenor, who has performed on the stages of many of the world’s great opera houses, returned to Cornwall from his home in Germany to make the recording.
Project coordinator Peter Penberthy, who grew up with John in Porthleven, said: “It’s a lovely commemorative CD, with an eight-page souvenir booklet, that will stir the pride of every Cornish man and woman.

“The band were delighted to have the opportunity to perform with John and honoured that he returned home to take part in the performance. The RNLI is a charity close to the hearts of both the band and to John, whose father, grandfather and great-grandfather were all fishermen in Porthleven.”
John Treleaven’s talent was discovered by chance when he was heard singing on the beach after a swim in the sea. Passing by at the time was a friend of William Lloyd Webber, the principal of the London College of Music. John was offered an audition and a scholarship and after four years of study took the lead tenor role in Carmen with the English National Opera.
RNLI community fundraising manager Guy Botterill said: “The CD is a must for anyone with a connection to Cornwall and particularly Helston and the Flora Day celebrations. The RNLI’s volunteer crew are on call 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, and that includes Christmas and New Year.
“The sales of the CD will
go towards ensuring crews have equipment and training needed to go to sea safely.”
Flora Dance CD is available from shops in Helston and Porthleven or through floral danceproject.com for £3.50 plus £1.50 postage and packaging.
