Plumes of thick black acrid smoke were visible for miles around after a tractor caught fire yesterday and the flames spread to a tinder dry cornfield.

"Then we saw these large billowing plumes of smoke and we headed over to see what was happening.

"It was clear it wasn't just a normal garden fire or something like that.

"The smoke was very noticeable from some distance away.

"I think that it's fair to say that you could see it for miles and miles away."

Mr Burke said his first concern was that people had been caught in the blaze.

"I was really worried that there was going to be someone in the middle of it, but as we got closer we could see a group of people standing around."

Mr Burke alerted Newquay Airport about the potential hazard to visibility and witnessed the firefighters' arrival.

Two crews from Newquay Fire Station wearing breathing apparatus and using jet reels extinguished the blaze in under an hour.

As the Newquay branch line was close to the field, fire crews also alerted Network Rail about the smoke.
