Affordable housing development in west Penwith given green light after loan approved
AN AFFORDABLE Penwith housing development can be built after the council approved a loan application to help fund the project.
The Land's End Peninsula Community Land Trust is now set to start building six affordable homes and two open market properties in Pendeen in August, after entering into negotiations with construction and property company, Kier.
The land trust had been awaiting confirmation of a development loan after seeking help from Cornwall Council's 'revolving fund' earlier this year and had planning permission granted in summer 2012.
Cornwall councillor Sue James, who chairs the land trust, hopes the properties stay affordable and available for local people. She said: "Affordable housing has become a hot topic of late.

"Not enough is being built in the view of the people in need but too much and in the wrong places when sites are being considered," she said. "People also fear that what is built will not go to local people so we do need to find a way of giving people more confidence that affordable, for local people, is an accurate description." Mrs James and her team plan to finalise a formal contract with Kier next month, and providing there are no complications in the valuations, agreements or building process, the six two-bedroom properties will be available through South West Homes for under £117,000 by March 2014.
The pair of two-bedroom bungalows, which will be sold on the open market to help fund the scheme, have an estimated price tag of £165,000 and will be sold through a local agent.
Community Aid Foundation has loaned the Land's End Peninsula Community Land Trust £25,000.
The trust is holding its annual meeting at St Just Town Council offices on Tuesday, July 2 at 7pm; all welcome.
