Afghan tour for Royal Marines
Royal Marines have today begun their six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan.
Members of 40 Commando have flown out to Helmand province where they will be based in the Nahr-e-Saraj region. A total of 650 personnel will be flying out over the next two months to take over duties as part of 4th Mechanized Brigade. The Marines, who are usually based at Norton Manor camp near Taunton, will be largely working to train and improve local Afghan police and army forces.
This is the third time 40 Cdo have been to Afghanistan. Their last two tours were based in the notorious Sangin region, with the last six-month deployment in 2010 claiming the lives of 14 Royal Marines.
