WESTCOUNTRY homes, beauty spots and parks could be under threat from wildfires if soaring temperatures continue to put dry ground at risk, according to council leaders.

The Local Government Association (LGA), which represents more than 350 councils in England, has warned that when temperatures soar grassy areas dry out creating a serious fire risk. In 2003 when temperatures hit a record-breaking 38.3C (100.9F), fire crews across England were called to 100,000 more outdoor fires than in the previous year.

In urban areas fires were started in parks by people dropping smouldering cigarettes, with the blaze often spreading to neighbouring gardens.

But remote areas such as Bodmin Moor, Exmoor, Dartmoor and Fells are more likely to catch fire naturally and burn out of control.

Coun Paul Bettison, chairman of the Local Government Association Environment Board, said: "People need to be alert to the increased risks and what they can do to prevent a fire from starting.

"Especially in the summer, outdoor fires can wipe out acres of countryside and important wildlife habitats. They also tie-up firefighters' time that could be spent saving lives elsewhere."

The LGA has advised people to throw away litter responsibly. Loose rubbish acts as a fuel for fire, especially on grass verges near roads and glass bottles can act like a magnifying glass, sparking a blaze.

People should avoid throwing cigarette ends on the ground or out of car windows, and regularly gather up garden waste such as dead leaves, dry grass and branches.

Bonfires should not be started in windy conditions. People should stay vigilant when out in the countryside and tell the fire brigade immediately about any signs of a fire.

According to the Met Office rainfall on Thursday night dampened down the ground, making the threat of fires this weekend less likely, although ground has been drying out again.

A spokesman said: "Saturday will see temperatures of up to 19 or 20C (68F) in North East Devon. In Cornwall, Newquay will enjoy the highest temperature of 18 or 19C (66F)."

“Someone needs to point out to the LGA that fire fighters are not idiots. If they have to choose between a wild fire on the moors, or a burning house with 5 kids inside they will not go the moors and lets little kiddies burn to death.
If we were loosing 20-30 people a year in wild fires I could see the issue. But I can¿t remember the last big wild fire the cost 100s millions in damage and several lives in the UK.”

“All they have done is to state the obvious.”

“Sounds like the LGA trying to justify its existence.”
