Alfresco artwork sparks plan for graffiti wall in play areas
THE country has Banksy while Helston has the equally anonymous graffiti artist who came up with this piece of work just off the town's Coinagehall Street.
The artwork has impressed quite a few who have seen it on their way from the town centre to a private car park off Tyacke Road.
Town warden Craig Bowcutt who referred to the work in his most recent report to Helston Town Council, describing it as "of a high standard".
He also suggested to members that they might consider placing a special "wall" for graffiti artists in one of the town's play areas.
Now it seems this idea will go onto the agenda of a future meeting of the relevant town council sub-committee.
Mr Bowcutt told the full council's September meeting that more graffiti has started to appear around the town from the start of that month, along with an increase in flyposting (for circuses in towns other than Helston).
He told councillors: "The Kerrier park warden painted the Coronation Park shelters one morning and by early evening that had been 'graffitied'."
He acknowledged that some of the al fresco artwork had been of a high standard.
He particularly singled out the drawing pictured here, "as the new design on the wall going from Coinagehall Street to the private car park below Kerrier's Tyacke car park".
Mr Bowcutt prompted: "This might suggest the need for a graffiti wall to be located in one of our play areas."
Mr Bowcutt also reported that benches in the sunken garden, which have often been targeted by vandals, "have yet again been defaced by graffiti and words being carved into the woodwork".
He reported that they had been repaired and repainted for the fourth time.
He has also completed refurbishment work on four of the town's other benches but told councillors that the weather had not been ideal for completing the task.
