'Amazing mum' up for accolade
THE CROWLAS mother of a young woman who died from cervical cancer has been shortlisted for a national mum of the year award.
Sandra Cousins, started the Mercedes Curnow Foundation after her daughter died aged just 23.
Mrs Cousins, who is campaigning to lower the age of smear tests from 25 to 20 and has taken a petition with 120,000 signatures to Downing Street, was nominated for the Tesco Mum of the Year Awards 2013 by friends Kathleen and Maureen Carpenter, who said: "Sandra is an amazing mum and lady who, while grieving for her own daughter, is helping to save the lives of others."
Out of 2,000 nominations nationwide, Mrs Cousins, who opened a charity shop in Truro earlier this month on what would have been Mercedes's 24th birthday, was then chosen along with just 34 other women to be shortlisted.

Mrs Cousins said: "I was really taken aback by how considerate and thoughtful people are (to nominate me); for what they do already on the foundation and to do that as well."
Mrs Cousins said she hoped the competition would help to raise further awareness of the foundation, which was recently awarded charity status. She raises funds nationwide and through the Truro shop to provide private cervical smear tests and HPV tests, raise awareness and support women under 35. Judging for the awards will take place throughout October by the panel, which will include the editor of Tesco magazine, Suzanna Scott, the founder of Britmums, Emma Forbes, Cherry Healey and Denise Lewis.
If Mrs Cousins wins she will be treated to a full makeover and her own Tesco magazine photo shoot, before being presented with her award in front of friends, family and celebrity guests in March at London's Savoy. For more information go to www.tescomagazine.com
