Ameobi and Gosling denied by woodwork
Shola Ameobi came agonisingly close to firing Newcastle United to a UEFA Europa League Group D victory, but the woodwork and Maritimo goalkeeper Romain Salin combined to thwart him in yesterday's 0-0 draw on the island of Madeira. The 30-year-old, captaining a much-changed side, hit a post and the crossbar and saw Salin block another effort on a frustrating evening for the Magpies. Newcastle's former Plymouth Argyle midfielder Dan Gosling was also denied by an upright.
