Annual ploughing and produce event fields a strong line up
THE WEATHER held out just long enough for St Buryan to host its 68th ploughing and produce event at the weekend.
Organisers said the annual show drew in good crowds and once again helped to keep traditional farming methods alive.
Simon Hollywood, general secretary, said between 200 and 300 people came to watch the 500-plus entrants who made it to the west Penwith village.
“We had a good number of people,” he said. “The ploughing competition keeps the art of ploughing going.

“There are all these skills to make sure aren’t lost.
“It’s nice to see the vintage stuff still being used and not rusting in the shed,” he added.
Although the day was hailed a success, the spectacle was not without its worries - as local farmers had to battle high winds and negotiate heavy rain in order to erect the main marquee and prepare the site.
Despite challenges however, Mr Hollywood added awkward weather in the lead-up to the contest cleared on Saturday, which saw some “lucky” and welcome sunshine.
Produce secretary David Worledge said he was delighted with how everything went at Bosfranken Farm.
“It was good to see young people entering for the first time and also people with no direct involvement in farming joining in and enjoying the day,” he said.
“There was something for everyone in the family to have a go at.”
He added the industry can often be a lonely profession, but praised the community aspect.
“Changes in farming practices have tended to make the job a more isolated one nowadays so the day has become a bit of a social event on the farming calendar, with people taking the opportunity to come and meet old friends that they don’t get to see as often any more.
“The chance of a little friendly competition just adds to the enjoyment”.
Mr Hollywood said some travelled from as far as Kidderminster and Bristol to take part in the ploughing contest - which had a range of classes. The overall champion was Truro’s Robert Irvine.
The produce show included categories such as crops, cookery, honey, dairy and creative pursuits.
Particular success went to St Buryan YFC, who fended off serious opposition from their counterparts at Madron and Praze, walking away with seven trophies.
Catherine Bolitho had a memorable day, winning four individual trophies for her culinary efforts.
Over 100 people attended a presentation and dinner at the Queen’s Hotel after the event.
