An appeal over a decision to refuse planning permission for more than 200 new homes in Somerset has been rejected.

The proposal for 244 homes, two shops and a play area at Wellington on land at Milverton Road was dismissed by an independent planning inspector after being originally turned down by Taunton Deane Borough Council.

Inspector David Nicholson said allowing housing on the site would contravene the council's recently adopted planning blueprint and the Government's own national planning policies.

He also decided the development proposed by South Western Property Ltd would be more than a mile from the town centre and present travel difficulties.

Mr Nicholson said: "It would be an isolated housing estate tenuously linked to the north of the town."

Councillor Mark Edwards, executive councillor for planning and transportation, said: "I welcome the inspector's decision. This clearly demonstrates the importance having the core strategy in place.

"It is also pleasing to see local people getting involved in issues that affect their community."
