Army prepares to go surfin’ USA – with help from Newquay Activity Centre
THE ARMY has chosen a surf centre in Newquay to get its surfing team in tip-top shape as it prepares to take on the US Marines in California next year.
Newquay Activity Centre, based at Fistral beach, announced last week that it has become the official sponsor and coaching partner of Army Surfing.
The team of wave-riding soldiers, who are also in training for the next annual Tri Services Surfing Championships in Cornwall, will receive specialist training and equipment from the centre, including lessons from top surfers such as world longboarding number two, Ben Skinner.
The centre has enjoyed a 15 year relationship with the Army offering activities as part of decompression training, for troops coming back from the front line.

Captain Richard Griffiths said: “With coastal based activity weeks becoming a sought after choice for Army units, surfing is subsequently developing into a popular sport within the Army. In order to develop the standard of surfing at both a novice and competitive level, Army Surfing has strengthened its ties with Newquay Activity Centre whose professional coaching packages are of clear benefit to the development of Army surfers.”
Newquay Activity Centre director Rob Barber added: “We are thrilled to be a sponsor of Army Surfing. We have had a long term relationship with the British Army over the last 15 years and it is great to put something back by promoting membership to Adventurous Training groups that visit the centre, by offering professional coaching sessions to the members of the club and supplying team kit for the event in California.”
