Out of the Drey - Young Red Squirrels

As a lad growing up near the banks of the River Teign, I could across a road, go through a small park, under a railway and I was on the beach. Although from Teignmouth I went to primary school in Shaldon, which meant a short walk across the river bridge on school days – a real pleasure as I could watch the estuary birds on the way.

I had many school friends who actually lived in Shaldon, so when school was finished we often went to the nearby Ness Woods to play. It was here that I used to see the then resident red squirrels as there were several dreys scattered throughout the woods.

I can remember being so excited watching the young squirrels when they had just left their nursery drey and were exploring their immediate surroundings. These fond memories inspired this week's artwork which was painted some years ago in watercolour.
