Asda and multiscreen cinema complex planned for Pool
A MAJOR retail and leisure complex including an Asda supermarket and multiscreen cinema is being planned for Pool.
Salmon Harvester Properties Limited, Cornwall Council’s chosen developer of the land next to Carn Brea Leisure Centre, confirmed to the West Briton that, subject to planning approval, the area will have a new Asda foodstore and Cineworld complex, the first in the county.
It was also confirmed that three or four restaurant units are to be built on the site currently occupied by the running track.
Rorie crrctHenderson, Salmon’s development director, said a consortium bid by Asda, Salmon and Cineworld had been accepted by Cornwall Council and a major planning application for a mix of retail and leisure units would be submitted for planning approval in the new year.
It comes after a landmark deal was struck between Cornwall Council and Salmon over the selling of the running track and parking land.
The council plans to use cash from the sale to fund a comprehensive refurbishment of the Carn Brea Leisure Centre.
Mr Henderson told the West Briton: “We worked with Asda and Cineworld to put this bid to Cornwall Council and we are delighted to be where we are.
“The scheme has been in limbo for the past 18 or so months but it’s as confirmed as it can be. There will be units for three or four restaurants too.
“We anticipate the next nine months to a year will be spent putting forward a major planning application for the site.
“It’s down to the planning now. But we are highly optimistic about that process.
“It is envisioned that the ten- acre site will have a mixture of retail and leisure complexes.”
A move to relocate the current running track to Redruth School has been rubberstamped.
The relocation has been praised by local athletics clubs. They were opposed to it going elsewhere in the county.
Colin Rowe, chairman of Carn Brea Leisure Centre Trust, said: “We are extremely pleased that Salmon Developments has been confirmed as the preferred developer for the delivery of the retail proposal on the Carn Brea site.
“They have an exceptional track record of delivering this type of scheme.
“We very much look forward to working with them on the next steps of a project that enables the leisure centre to be transformed and the facility to be secured for the benefit of the community long term.”
