ASDA claims the vast majority of visitors to an exhibition of their proposals for a supermarket at Hayle's rugby club have backed the plan.

The supermarket giant and Hayle RFC unveiled the plans, which would see the club relocate to a purpose-built stadium nearby at Carwin Rise, at the end of January.

A spokesman for Asda said around 400 people saw detailed plans for both sites, and for proposed highway improvements at Loggan's Moor roundabout.

A total of 208 feedback cards had been received, and 95% of those that commented said Memorial Park is the best location for a new supermarket in the town.

The survey is also claimed to show that the same percentage said they would prefer Asda to other supermarket companies and 96 backed the scheme on show.

Visitors were also asked to comment on Hayle RFC's plans at Carwin Rise, with 39 positive responses received.

Steve Benney, chairman of the rugby club, said it was clear there was "huge local support for the development".

"Hayle RFC and the community will benefit, not only from the new stadium for the club but from the jobs that will be created and from the changes proposed at the Loggan's Moor."

Chris Marlow, property communications manager for Asda, said the scheme had "struck a chord with local people".

Of the two planning applications so far submitted for stores in the town, both Sainsbury's and ING's plans have been withdrawn, the latter after Cornwall Council officers indicated they would be recommending refusal. Applications from Asda and Morrison's are yet to be submitted.

“How many of the 400 were members of the rugby club or from the foundry end of Hayle? Instead of relocating the rugby club from it's 'Memorial Park' (in case its members have forgotten this grounds roots) why is there no proposal to just put Asda where the rugby club is planning to move to? Slipways on and off of the A30 sound more sense than increasing the heavy traffic congestion already in Marsh Lane.”
