AN ASPIRING politician has taken The Cornishman's campaign for a visit by David Cameron to the chairman of the Conservative Party.

Derek Thomas, chosen as prospective parliamentary candidate for St Ives by its constituency Conservative Association, met MP and party chairman Grant Shapps in London and used the opportunity to hand over a copy of The Cornishman, asking for it to be passed to Mr Cameron.

"During a brief conversation I outlined the challenges faced by Penzance and the town centre," he said.

"I believe that what's needed is a stronger parliamentary voice, money spent to improve our transport links and cash made readily available by the banks to allow our businesses to grow.

"We must demonstrate to people from across Cornwall and further afield that Penzance is a good place to shop and a good place to do business."

Mr Thomas fought the St Ives seat in 2010 but lost out to Andrew George. He has now put his name forward as the Tory candidate for that seat in the 2015 General Election.

“I'm afraid 'aspiring politician' (or 'failed prospective parliamentary candidate') Derek Thomas' vote peaked at the last general election. With UKIP support rising exponentially, if Derek wants to be in with a chance in 2015 he's best off joining UKIP. No last minute publicity stunts on the back of a Cornishman letter are going to make the slightest bit of difference. Sorry, Del.”

“So Grant Shapps (is that what he's calling himself this week?), Tory party chairman meets Tory activist and aspiring greasy pole climber Derek Thomas (who he?). And this is news because....?

I really hope that this is not the beginnings of a subliminal Tory election campaign by proxy.”
