Author speaks about Thomas Wood Holgate at Falmouth Art Gallery
Thomas Wood Holgate (1869-1954) was born in Oldham and moved to London to study art. His pictures were much exhibited in the years before 1914, and later in London and Cornwall. Not only an artist, he also taught music at Trinity College London.
Having a wife from Cornwall, he retired here for the last twenty five years of his life, and both painted and taught music from his house at Stratton Place, Greenbank, Falmouth. During the Second World War, he spent some time at Bosvathick, near Constantine.

Famous for his portraits, he also did fine small scale oils of the countryside, of the sea, of cliffs, of buildings and of churches.
Author Stephen Tyrrell will be giving a talk in the gallery on Tuesday 12 March at 3pm and signing copies of his new book, Thomas Wood Holgate: An introduction to his life and paintings.
