A Westcountry author has been awarded a prestigious literary prize for his fact-filled history book.

Horrible Science: House of Horrors by Nick Arnold, from Devon, won the "Best Book with Facts" category at this year's Blue Peter Book Awards.

The book, with illustrations by Tony De Saulles, will help young readers "discover gruesome facts about the hidden aspects of everyday living".

It beat Michael Rosen's Fantastic Mr Dahl and Walter Tull's Scrapbook by Michaela Morgan.

Mr Arnold said: "Winning this award is better than winning the lottery since I know that House of Horrors has been judged against the very best children's books.

"Right now I feel so out of this world I am in danger of ending up on another planet!"

There are more than five million Horrible Science books in print.

Nick Arnold worked on the titles for more than 15 years with publisher Scholastic.

The winners received their trophies on a special World Book Day edition of the programme broadcast yesterday evening.
