THE helm of Cornwall’s new super council looks set to be taken by a former chief executive of Newcastle City Council.

Kevin Lavery is expected to be named as the new chief executive for the new Cornwall Council tomorrow after his appointment is approved by councillors sitting on the Implementation Executive which is overseeing the creation of the new council.

Mr Lavery, 47, has also held senior management posts at BT and was chief executive of Serco Solutions until July this year.

When Mr Lavery joined Newcastle City Council in 1997 he was the youngest chief executive in the country. He has also held senior roles at Westminster City Council, Kent County Council and the London Borough of Bexley.

Mr Lavery has also worked for consultancy firm PriceWaterhouse Coopers, public sector firm Enterprise plc and e-government company Agilisys.

He was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and was educated at Manchester and Kent universities.

Cornwall Council will take over all local government services in Cornwall from next April when the existing system of district councils and a county council is scrapped.

“im sure whatever background they have will wont only good things for the community they choose to call their homes.
There is however a threat to us local cornishmen from outsiders city types with wallets full and cash just going spare buying all types of home and spending the paid holidays from work away from the city to relax for only a matter of weeks and spending money on what living requires and not on tourism a major earner for the county. We can only hope they plan on retiring here at a young age so as to hopefully return some of what they stole from the cornish people of my generation and those that come behind me.
Only half the residents now are local people now it scares me to think what ten years from now holds. We all need to make sure our heritage is not forgotten to become just another legend of olden time but atrue account of the lives of the cornish people at 30 I want to know more than i do about our schools of mining as these are shape our modern world and deserve more than to be demolished for superstores to make bigger profits each time getting more power on what buildings and areas they want to command just because no-one can afford to fund any leagal disputes against them there isnt much in the way of work for locals to carry on living here and if the history we are proud of is forgotten it makes moving away a little easier.
My home always has and will be the amazing landscapes amd decent people and forever i will be proud to belong in my homeland a tiny and rural affair that shaped the modern way of todays living the world over by sharing the knowledge gained from harsh enviroments and the true survivors who made do as best was possible in times of hardship and shared the wealth when it was there to do so and yes im poor in terms of finance but rich in happiness just glad to live my life in a really special place”

“Karma incorrectly states that the Cornish repelled the Romans. No they didn't.The Rpmans invaded Cornwall. The remains of three forts still exist in the county. The Cornish didn't neeed subjugating they happily traded tin with the Romans.”

“It seems that some here have forgotten that cornwall county council has been run by cornish people for donkeys years

maybe someone from up country will get this place moving and jobs and stuff here.

I'm fed up with this "only cornish are good enough" we've had our Cornish councilors up to here.”
