Badger song bid to knock X Factor off No 1 slot

BBC wildlife presenter Sir David Attenborough has added his voice to a badger-themed Westcountry bid to claim the Christmas number one slot.

Rob Drake-Knight, former Plymouth University Business student who runs his own sustainable clothing company, has recorded a single he hopes will deny X Factor winner James Arthur the festive top spot next week.

The charity song, which also features presenter and naturalist Chris Packham, aims to raise money for the Badger Trust.

It calls for support for Brian May's petition to halt the planned badger culls next year and is given away free to those who sign, with a limited edition T-shirt also on offer.

Every year, Mr Drake-Knight's eco firm, Rapanui, makes a Christmas video.

This year, it portrays a Santa at rock bottom who turns to the youth market to solve a sales crisis, enlisting celebrities along the way.

He spots Sir David speaking about the cull on television, before launching into the song, titled The Present of Life.

Sir David, who opposes the cull and has recorded a voice over, said the Government-commissioned a scientific study into shooting badgers which showed "culling is not a viable policy option".

Presenter of the Really Wild Show Packham, who plays drums on the video, said it would be an "amazing achievement" to dislodge such a hugely popular show as X Factor. "The battle for the coveted Christmas number one spot is always tough, but we are ready for it," he added.

Some of the biggest names in music will compete to claim top spot.

The bookies' favourite is the Hillsborough families' charity single He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother. The chart will be revealed on December 23.
