A woman who stole nearly £50,000 from Barclays Bank, her employer, was sentenced to a year in jail at Truro Crown Court on Friday.

Rachael Martin, 24, of Tremayne Road, St Austell, started work in March 2010 at Barclays in Liskeard. During September and October that year she entered false information about cheques into the bank's computer system. She then went on a spending spree, including £4000 on breast implants, £1600 for dental work and £500 on cosmetic surgery.

Initially charged with 25 counts of theft, which she denied, the alleged offences were condensed into a single charge to which she then pleaded guilty.

In sentencing, Jeremy Wright told her that she had shown a "concerted, clever and serious breach of trust", noting that "Considering the seriousness of the crime... it seems to me a mockery if I didn't send you to prison right away."
