A TEAM of 29 volunteers removed 62 kg of rubbish at the 10th annual Beach Watch litter survey and clean up last Saturday. The event, held at Hendra Beach, at the east end of Praa Sands, is run by the Marine Conservation Society and marks the survey's 10th anniversary. A detailed survey is made of the rubbish found and its sources. Notable items this year were cylumes (glow sticks) believed to originate from fisheries off Canada, medical waste including a hypodermic needle and various traceable fish and cargo tags.

The report is used to focus the attention of the Government, industry and public on keeping the seas and beaches clear of litter. Volunteers included residents, members of Helston Baptist Church and student observers from 750 Naval Air Squadron at RNAS Culdrose.
