'Bedroom tax' protest
CAMPAIGNERS are taking their fight against a 'bedroom tax' brought in by the Government to the streets of Penzance this weekend.
The protest is due to take place at the bottom of Causewayhead on Saturday from noon to 2pm and is organised by the by Cornwall Anti-Cuts Alliance, supported by Penwith Anti-Cuts Alliance and Unite.
Brought in last month, the Government's new spare room policy – dubbed the bedroom tax – is part of the new universal credit scheme.
It means housing association and council tenants will have housing benefits cut if they are deemed to have spare bedrooms – 14 per cent cut for one spare room and 25 per cent for two – in a move designed to free up large houses.
