Bids roll in as TV's Richard Madeley is auctioneer for a night
TV PRESENTER Richard Madeley has helped raise thousands of pounds by taking on the role of auctioneer for a charity evening.
The former This Morning presenter, half of celeb couple Richard and Judy, picked up the gavel to help raise £4,600 at the Polperro Auction of Goods and Promises.
The money will go towards next year's Polperro Festival, a nine-day celebration of arts, music and entertainment which will take place from June 14 to 22.
Mr Madeley said: "It was great to see people turning out in force and showing such amazing generosity.
"The auction was a total triumph thanks to that and we raised a stonking pile of dosh."
Organisers said it was one of the most successful fundraising events held in the village to date, with 350 people there on Saturday night.
One star lot was a champagne lunch at the Talland Bay Hotel, with Mr Madeley as host, for a party of three people – which went for £600.
Mr Madeley had offered to pay for the lunch himself but the hotel stepped in and picked up the bill.
Other lots included two access-all-areas tickets to see alt-rockers Del Amitri, seven nights' accommodation in a private villa with a pool in Florida, a short break staying in an historic holiday cottage overlooking Polperro harbour, three months' free parking in the Polperro car park, a family pass to the Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan, an Alpaca pashmina, a psychic reading and five dozen scallops.
Festival chairman Jude Mullarkey said: "We'd like to say a huge thank-you to everyone who has supported the auction with donations, to the car park for allowing free parking, to the Royal British Legion who helped us to stage the event and to everyone who placed a bid and helped to raise much-needed funds.
"Most of all we want to thank Richard Madeley for his help in promoting the auction and for giving up his time so generously to be our auctioneer.
"Without the money we raised we would have had a real struggle to stage the 2014 festival and match up to previous years' entertainment; we can now go forward with a great deal more confidence."
