Championships attract a good entry
CORNWALL'S cross country runners will be gathering in force this Sunday when the Brooks Cornwall Cross Country Championships will be held at the Newquay Sports Centre, starting with the combined race for Senior Women and the Under 17 Men and Women at 1pm, writes Alan Rowling.
Once again these championships have been incorporated into the season's second Westward Cross Country League fixture, which will provide the Cornish runners with extra competition, as they will be joined in the Westward League competition by many of Devon's best cross country exponents.
The Newquay course is ideal for spectators, who can follow the progress of the races around the perimeter of the Sports Centre.
The courses are generally flat with a few gentle inclines and steep banks between the playing field levels but still present a tough challenge to runners.

An added incentive for those competing in the Championships will be the opportunity to be selected for the County team, initially at the South West Inter Counties in early January and later in the National Inter Counties in Birmingham in March.
It will certainly be a busy day of cross country running with eight races on the programme, concluding with the Senior Men's event, which will attract more than 100 runners.
As in previous years these Championships will also accommodate the very important Development Races for the county's up and coming cross country talent in the Under 11 Girls' and Boys' events.
Much of the individual and team competition is likely to be between the County's top two clubs, Cornwall AC and Newquay and Par AC. In the Young Athletes races, a sprinkling of school based runners will provide additional interest to the competition.
