A history teacher found guilty of bigamy "remains an employee" at his school, the governors have announced.

Christopher Doyle, a teacher at Newquay Tretherras School in Cornwall, successfully appealed against a four-month jail sentence for bigamy in August after admitting the charge at an earlier hearing.

School governors have now agreed Mr Doyle will continue on the staff, but have refused to confirm whether he will remain in the same position.

Chairman of the governors, Richard Simeons, said: "The governors carried out a comprehensive review of the case involving Mr Doyle and have an agreed an appropriate course of action.

"Mr Doyle remains an employee of the school."

Mr Simeons said he would not comment further on the matter, saying it has proved an "unwanted distraction" from the school's academic achievements during the summer.

He added: "This coverage has been very unfair. We received our best A-Level and GCSE results for a third consecutive year, which is a tribute to the hard work of the staff and the pupils.

"We want to improve on those results next year, without the unwanted distractions of this summer.

"Mr Doyle did something wrong, he has paid for it, and he has been judged through the court process. That, for me, is the end of it. Now we move on."

Mr Doyle had spent six days behind bars at Exeter Prison, following his sentencing by Truro magistrates.

He married his first wife, Sandra Stolberg, 44, in Missouri, US, in November 2007. However, they then separated and Doyle returned to the UK and married Lucy Ford in February this year.
