Bodmin Town face six away days in title challenge

BODMIN Town's Carlsberg South West Peninsula League title credentials will be put to the test on the road over the next month.

Following tonight's home clash against struggling Falmouth Town (7.30), the reigning champions embark on a run of six successive away league fixtures.

So by the time they return to Priory Park on Wednesday April 17, they will have only five league games left, four of which will be at home.

They have a five point lead at the top of the premier division over Plymouth Parkway, who have played two games more.

Bodmin boast a superb away record, having won ten of their 11 games on their travels this season, and have not lost a league game away from home since October 2011 when Launceston beat them 2-1.

Manager Darren Gilbert said: "We are heading into a crucial time of the season and to have six away games on the bounce is a challenge.

"But it might take some pressure off the players to be away. We have certainly played better away this season, whereas we have struggled at times in home matches."

Bodmin's Super Six away run starts at seventh placed Camelford this Saturday, followed a week later by Elburton Villa, the only team to beat them so far this season.

Other trips follow to Saltash (March 26), Newquay (Good Friday, March 29), Liverton (April 6) and Tavistock (April 13).

Bodmin will need to rediscover their form to maintain the excellent away record, because despite continuing their winning run, they have not played well for several weeks.

On Saturday they needed two goals in stoppage time to beat Witheridge 2-1 at Priory Park, with Gilbert admitting he felt 'embarrassed' to have taken three points.

He said: "Based on their second half performance, Witheridge deserved to win. The only thing you can say about our players is that they never give up.

"Luke Hodge conjured up an equaliser in the first minute of injury time and then Lewis Reed sends over a hopeful cross in the fourth minute of time added on which their keeper and defender make a mess of, and the ball goes in.

"But the goals didn't hide the fact that we didn't play well. To be honest I don't think we've played well since we went out to Gornal in the FA Vase (February 9).

"I can't really put my finger on what's wrong but at some point we will rediscover our rhythm, beat someone by four or five, and we'll be on our way again."
