MENHENIOT TENNIS CLUB NETS COUNTY AWARD:

Menheniot Tennis Club is celebrating a very successful 2011.

At the Cornwall Tennis AGM Sally Lobb, coaching assistant at Menheniot Tennis Club, was awarded Cornwall Coach of the Year for her support of Cornish tennis and for the development of the Menheniot Tennis Club Programme.

Sally has assisted head coach Stewart Lees in establishing a successful Mini Tennis programme at the club for more than 30 local schoolchildren, and in running an adult coaching programme for both beginners and more experienced players. This has led to a doubling of membership numbers and the club is looking forward to building on this success in 2012. Stewart said that without Sally's input this would just not have been possible, and he feels that this is a very well deserved award which should put Menheniot firmly on the tennis map.

Sally is also working with other committee members, notably Jan Santillo, club secretary, towards achieving Clubmark Status for the club, a nationally recognised standard across many sports.

The club welcomes new players, and children aged five to ten are invited to join the Mini Tennis programme.

BUDE STARS OF THE FUTURE:

Two tennis players in Bude are showing great potential at a very young age and have both successfully represented the county at regional and national tournaments.

Louis Davey, eight, and Samuel Jennings, nine, both pupils at Stratton Primary school are spending six hours a week playing tennis as well as taking part in competitions.

Over the Christmas holiday Louis played in the national Powder Byrne under-eight tournament at Bisham Abbey, Marlow. Louis, coached by Hannah Miller at the Tarka Tennis Centre in Barnstaple, took the prestigious Powder Byrne Trophy title, defeating players who had qualified from all over the country.

His prize was two Dunlop tennis bags, tennis balls and a one year initial sponsor contract with Dunlop to supply him with rackets, clothing and bags. Louis has a two day trip to West Hants at half term, playing and being coached at an Elite training centre.

He is also attending county and regional talent days.

Louis will play in grade three regional tournaments which means some big trips away, the first to Bath University at the end of this month.

Samuel Jennings, who trains in Bude and Bodmin, has in the last year won two tournaments in Bristol, the Clifton College and the David Lloyd open.

He also qualified for a LTA National event by winning the regional tournament in Exmouth. He has made the long trip to Cambridge for his first taste of the national circuit. Samuel's successes resulted in selection for the U9 county tennis squad and he has also been included in the county U10 squad for the 2012 season.

He is a member of Bude RATS (Running And TriathalonS) and is a talented footballer with Bude Youth Football Club. The Blanchminster trust have assisted in the funding of one of his trips away. Samuel owes a great deal of thanks to Martin Venning and Gary Bickle for their constant training support and help.

Stratton head teacher Phil Aldis says: "We are very proud of both Samuel and Louis and their achievements. They not only play to a very high standard but both obviously really enjoy their tennis and are very modest about their success."

Both boys are being supported by the Budehaven Community School Junior Athlete Education (JAE) Programme which offers support to the talented athletes at Budehaven and their feeder primary schools to ensure that a balance is kept between school and sport at the top level.

Golf

TREVOSE LADIES:

A bright but bitterly cold day greeted the 22 entrants in this week's Stableford competition. The hard ground and biting easterly wind made playing conditions difficult as everyone struggled to keep warm.

In Silver Division, Vanessa Eldridge and Judy Huntley coped best in the cold and had a very close battle for top spot. Vanessa has been in excellent form over the last few months and she continued to play well throughout her round, enjoying six pars on her way to a winning score of 31 points.

It was a welcome return to form for Judy after a difficult spell and, although she encountered problems on three holes, she played the other 15 beautifully to score 30 points and take second place.

In Bronze Division the two front runners played very similar rounds. Both Liz Kennerley and Pat Gove played some lovely golf but they each had four problem holes in the course of their rounds.

Liz had two very good scoring runs, from the fourth to the eighth and the 13th and 16th, with the highlight being a lovely par on the 16th hole.

Pat Gove started her round slowly but put together a very strong finish over the last ten holes with two excellent pars on the eighth and 15th.

It was an intriguing battle but Liz managed to fight off Pat's challenge and claim first place with 32 points, just ahead of Pat on 30 points.

Result: 1st Silver Vanessa Eldridge 31pts; 2nd Silver, Judy Huntley 30; 1st Bronze, Liz Kennerley 32pts; 2nd Bronze, Pat Gove 30.

ST ENODOC LADIES:

St Enodoc Ladies had a highly successful day on January 29 when they played Roserrow Ladies in the first round of the Mail on Sunday competition.

The format is singles match play with five ladies in each team. Despite deteriorating weather, the St Enodoc Ladies played some great golf, the results of which are reflected in the score.

Jane Bendall beat Maggie Day six and four, Beth Elliott beat Irene Breckon four and two, Shannon Ashcroft beat Jackie Smith four and three and Sue Willmott beat Ann Braithwaite six and four. Gill Goodright took Lyn Ashcroft to the final green but Lyncame ot the winner for St Enodoc after a very close game to make the final result 5-0.

On Tuesday the Ladies played a Yellow Ball competition on both courses. On the Church course the winners with 63 points were Chris Dymond, Penny Moon and Puuline Wilkins.

In second place were Pat Parry, Jane Bendall and Bobbie Rounsevell with 58 points.

The winners on the Holywell course with an amazing score of 81 points were Gloria Crouch, Nan Girling and Helen Russell.

Fishing

TEMPLE TROUT FISHERY:

Overcast days produced some good sport at the fishery in January with fish being close to the surface. In these conditions anglers have caught some good bags of fish with floating lines fished with nymphs and mini lures, writes Julian Jones.

The largest five-fish bag of the month was caught by Chris Tippett, of Whiddon Down, who landed five rainbows for 16lb 4oz fishing a Cat's Whisker. Chris's largest rainbow of the bag weighed in at 6lb 12oz.

The largest trout of the month was caught by Richard Colsell, of Newquay, who landed a 12lb 13oz brown fishing a black nymph. Richard's four fish bag weighed in at 20lb 9oz.

The largest rainbow of the month was caught by Kevin Martyn, of Launceston, who landed a 9lb 1oz fish on a Willow Warbler. Kevin's three fish bag weighed 12lb 4oz.
