Boxing bout in memory of west Cornwall son Sgt Paul Fox lost to landmine

A boxing match held in memory of a fallen war hero from West Cornwall raised thousands of pounds for charity at the weekend.

Father-of-three Sgt Paul Fox, of 28 Engineer Regiment, was killed by a landmine blast in Afghanistan two years ago this month.

This weekend, a team from the Royal Engineers Boxing Club took on Devon and Cornwall Select in a fundraising event held at the Tregenna Castle Hotel in St Ives.

Sgt Fox's father, Maurice, said it was a great evening which his son would have loved.

"Paul would have been very proud," he said. "It was a superb evening.

"The Royal Engineers were supported by members of 24 and 59 Commando from Chivenor.

"The standard of the competition was very high and I think everyone had a great time."

Mr Fox sent out a personal vote of thanks to St Ives police, who manned the door and organised a raffle.

He said they had yet to tally up the proceeds from the event, but he believed they had raised thousands of pounds. The money will be split between the Army Benevolent Fund, Macmillan cancer appeal and St Ives Boxing Club and local youth theatre group Kidz R Us.
