BARNEY Pearson is a boat- builder by trade, but for years he has been making furniture in his spare time.

Most if it ended up at his mum's and he said: "I never thought anybody would want to buy it and due to working full-time I never thought about selling it."

But then the 33-year-old met Clare Alvarez-Howard three years ago.

She is a personal adviser with teenagers and immediately saw the potential in his work. The result was the creation of the Constantine-based company Bramleywood Design.

"Clare is the brains of the operation and is building this into a family business," added Mr Pearson. He is happy in the workshop while she networks and is the face of the company. They now have a website www.bramleywooddesign.co.uk.

Miss Alvarez-Howard said: "There are so many talented people in Cornwall that I feel we should promote each other. Cornwall is jam packed full of great little businesses who are so friendly and it is nice to work face to face with people who are also small businesses starting out."

The business is currently showcasing work at The Olive Grove near Truro and on the Cornish Magpie website.

Mr Pearson still works at Gweek Boatyard and spends his weekends and evenings in the workshop creating bespoke pieces of furniture to order. He uses a variety of materials including reclaimed and sustainably resourced wood packaging and driftwood.

"I like to use whatever I can get my hands on," he said. "For example if I am walking around and find some handles that need a little tlc, I am happy to clean them up and add to a piece.

"I like each piece to be as unique as possible. I sometimes buy timber in, but can feel really inspired by a found piece of old wood."

Coming from Cornwall helped too.

"It is easy to be inspired every day being surrounded by beautiful landscapes, the sea and so many other creative people."
