Building starts at £2.2m development on prime St Ives site
WORK has begun on a £2.2m development of nine luxury houses on the site formerly occupied by a landmark St Ives hotel.
The high end residences are being built by The Midas Group on Trelyon Avenue – a prime on what is the gateway to St Ives with stunning views over St Ives Bay.
The granite built Dean Court Hotel was torn down to make way for the development earlier in the year.
The View is the latest in a series of expensive luxury developments in the town that has led to worried locals raising concerns about the focus on properties more likely to appeal to investors and holiday homers.

The development of deluxe four bedroom homes – called The View – is not likely to increase the availability of housing stock for the young people of the town keen to buy.
However, the development itself only had two objections from residents.
The Midas Group said the homes, being created for developers Acorn Blue, will each enjoy outstanding panoramic views of St Ives Bay stretching from the harbour to the left across to Carbis Bay on the right.
Foundations are now being laid and work on the nine houses, built in two terraces of five and four properties, is due to be completed by June 2014.
The properties will all be three-storey with living accommodation on the upper floors, and each will have balconies to ensure residents can make the most of the spectacular scenery.
An innovative underground basement car park at the site will provide parking space for 18 vehicles, said Midas.
There will also be landscaped communal gardens as well as private terraces for some of the homes.
Justin Penhallurick, The View project manager for Midas Construction, said: “This is going to be an absolutely spectacular development, and the views that each of these nine homes will have will be phenomenal – hence why it is being called The View.
“The entire development has been designed to maximise the incredible panoramas from this unique location, and the houses have been carefully planned so the residents can enjoy the very best views at all times.
“Parking is always at a premium in St Ives, and this development offers a great way to maximise the space available and include ample parking, as well as offering homes with one of the best views in the area.”
The Dean Court Hotel closed when the owners retired after running the venue for 12 years.
Objecting to the loss of the Dean Court Hotel and the building of The View, Dr J Lakic from Trelyon Avenue wrote: “I strongly object to replacing this early 20th century beautiful grey granite mansion with nine buildings. This would result in eliminating the present eye-pleasing garden and substituting it with a housing estate.
“The sole purpose of this development is to enrich the pockets of the owners at the expanse of the local community and its environment.”
The View is Midas Construction’s second current major building project in St Ives.
They began work in February on a £1.3million project to create a complex of 12 luxury apartments on the site of the Belyars Croft Hotel, which was destroyed in a fire in 2007. That development for Bengold Properties is due to complete in October 2013.
Acorn Blue said there was already strong interest from potential buyers.
Sales director Nicola Markham said: “The View is proving to be very popular. There has already been enormous interest in the development, and I envisage all properties being sold off plan prior to them completing.”
