Burger King steps up to plate over mural painted over in Newquay
A group of artistic teenagers are celebrating after being offered £3,000 by a fast food giant to recreate a mural which was controversially whitewashed over outside a Cornish restaurant.
Youngsters from the My A'th Kar Newquay (MAKN) group were distressed after their painting on the outer wall of Burger King in Newquay was covered up without warning earlier this month.
But after an outpouring of support from the town, the restaurant has now stepped in to offer £3,000 to recreate the mural at an alternative site.
My A'th Kar Newquay is Cornish for "I love you Newquay" and the artwork was created to support the Newquay Safe project – a scheme tackling problems including anti-social behaviour.
Member Jourdan Brewer, 15, said: "We're just really pleased to be back on track with Burger King and in partnership again.
"We all worked incredibly hard to create the first mural so are really glad that the work will be reinstated.
"It's a real shame that the first one had to go but we're always trying to be positive and it has helped us to get the word about My A'th Kar Newquay and what we're doing."
Paul Golder, finance director of Zing Leisure/Burger King, said: "We were disappointed that the original mural was not able to stay, but we strongly support local initiatives such as My A'th Kar Newquay who are working hard to bring a positive sense of identity and pride to so many people in Newquay."
