Burglar, 22, threw manhole cover through shop window
A BURGLAR threw a manhole cover through the window of a shop to make off with alcohol and tobacco worth nearly £400.
At Truro Magistrates' Court, Dudley Rickard, 22, of no fixed address in Camborne, pleaded guilty to burglary of the Co-op in Hayle on January 13.
Alison May, for the prosecution, said police found him in the store after they went through the hole in the window. The cost of repairing the glass was £700. Rickard had a previous conviction for a similar offence. Paul Gallagher, his solicitor, said his previous offence came after he and his girlfriend lost a child in premature birth. After that they lost twins. He had been coping reasonably well and keeping off alcohol but on the day of this offence the couple had argued. He wanted a drink but had no money and decided to steal. He broke the window, thought better of it, walked away, but then returned.
District Judge Diane Baker told Rickard: "You have suffered some very difficult circumstances which is not an excuse but it explains why you got yourself depressed and did not care what happened. You have to address your alcohol and your bereavement."
