Buzzing: Stephen wins
THE UNSEASONAL weather has made it a strange year for bees, but not for Cornwall's King Bee Stephen Pearce.
The Bodmin beekeeper's honey exhibit again won him the Blue Ribbon trophy – the 14th time he has captured the Best in Show prize.

Mr Pearce said his secret was to inspect his honey just as a show judge would, give it marks, and then try to improve on it before entering it into the show.
"I started keeping bees when I was 11, back in 1971, and became a show steward in the honey section in 1975, so I suppose my success is down to experience.

"I love exhibiting but it is always a great honour to win Best in Show.
He said honey production had been good this year, despite the unseasonal weather confusing bees.
"It's been a funny year for bees, being sunny when it shouldn't have been and wet and cold when it should have been warm, but the overall quality of the honey in this year's show has been very good, given that it will be a very short season for a beekeeper.''
Mr Pearce, who won no fewer than five of the top prizes, said it was encouraging to see that beekeeping was on the increase.
An embroidered display on the theme of bees and the diamond jubilee won Launceston Beekeepers' Club the exhibit with most merit.
