NEWCOMER BEN SEARCHES FOR WINNING FORMULA:

A young motorcycle enthusiast from Connor Downs is set to compete in a national championship race series.

Ben Harrison, 21, grew up around bikes and has set up BH Racing to follow his dream of being a motorcycle racer.

A member of the NG (North Gloucestershire) Road Racing club, Ben said he did not realise it would be possible for him to get into racing until last year when he was doing research on the internet.

Last July, he decided to make the dream a reality and started saving towards the 2013 series, buying his race bike in December.

He plans to enter the Formula 400 races starting with a newcomers' testing and training session at Pembrey, Wales.

Ben's race schedule will take him to Kent, Cheshire and Hampshire over the next few months to compete in weekend and one day events.

The factory worker from Connor Downs is paying for the events bit by bit and said he hoped to have enough funds to complete the season but it would be a big help if any businesses decided to sponsor him.

"This is a UK championship race series held all over the UK attracting spectators and racers from all over the country," he said.

"Entering this is a huge undertaking as the nearest race is 200 plus miles away, some coming close to 400 miles, currently I have funded everything myself but I'm looking for anyone that can help me on my way.

"Anything from fuel or entry fees towards each round to bike spares would be a huge help."

He said that in return he could offer advertising space on his bike.

"If I can do well and it seems something I feel I am good at, I would definitely look to continue with it," he added.

"Each race attracts a large group of people not only other racers but spectators, race officials and photographers, there is a huge opportunity for advertisement coverage."

He estimates that the season will cost upwards of £2,000.

HAYLE WRAP UP DOUBLE:

Pirates Amateurs 6, Hayle 14

HAYLE completed the Cornwall & Devon League double over their Penwith rivals to extend their recent winning streak to five games and with it end the Amateurs own three-match unbeaten run.

The Hayle pack were the deciding feature in this fixture. The visiting Lions totally dominated the majority of the scrums and also worked well in the line-out, denying the home side possession for long spells in the game. The Hayle back line were excellent in defence and simply proved too strong for the opposition.

In a feisty local derby clash three players from either side received yellow cards, while the home side's cause certainly wasn't helped by losing influential hooker Jack Lugg with an early shoulder injury

And with the Amateurs forced to reshuffle, their scrummage and line-out were badly affected as a result.

However, it was the hosts who were first to put points on the board, with a penalty from Rhys Brownfield after ten minutes. And despite soaking up further Hayle pressure Brownfield then slotted another penalty attempt between the posts soon after for a 6-0 lead.

Hayle gradually began to get on top with their extra physical edge at the breakdown allowing them to keep the ball and ask some serious questions of the home defence.

And a minute before the break the Lions gave themselves a 7-6 half-time lead when they were awarded a penalty try which scrum-half Martin Strick duly converted.

The second half followed in a similar vein with the Amateurs guilty of playing into the visitors' hands at times as the Hayle pack continued to dominate and again piled the pressure on the home try line.

However, for all their territorial advantage, the score remained at 7-6 until the 64th minute, when a second penalty try for the visitors, following a scrum, was again converted by Strick to make it 14-6, which is how the scoreline remained as the Lions held on comfortably to the final whistle.

Hayle remain in fourth place in the table, with the Amateurs slipping to seventh spot following OPM's 20-15 home win over Liskeard-Looe.

This Saturday Hayle are without a league fixture, while the Amateurs face a potentially tricky trip to Lux Park to play Liskeard-Looe (3pm).

Camborne deservedly came out on top by the narrowest of margins in a keenly contested Merit Table encounter at the Recreation Ground.

The visitors had first use of the slope and built up a 12-8 lead by the interval courtesy of four penalty goals.

For the home side Grant Thirlby landed a penalty and right wing Jack Churcher popped up on the opposite flank to cross for a well worked try.

In the second period which the Cherry & Whites dominated No 8 Martin Woolcock dived over to touch down a crucial score which fly half Thirlby converted taking the score to 15-12.

Late on Wadebridge almost snatched victory with an unconverted breakaway try only for Thirlby to coolly land a 30 metre penalty soon after to give the home side the spoils.

Youth football

COBRAS IN TITLE CHARGE:

CarharrackU13s 3 Trevenson Cobras U13s 4

Trevenson Cobras travelled to Carharrack to try and maintain their challenge for the league.

The visitors had early chances, which the Carharrack keeper did very well to keep out, before joint man of the match Adam Webber managed to get on the end of a Ben Alston cross.

Carharrack were not without their opportunities, but Trevenson keeper Connor Tregidga, who was the joint man of the match, pulled off some fine saves to keep them at bay.

Carharrack did manage to score before half time from a fine ball through the middle that the home striker coolly dispatched.

Trevenson regained the lead after the break through Adam Webber to put them 2-1 up.

Carharrack went straight back down the other end and equalised from the penalty spot and then went 3-2 up.

The rattled Cobras now had seven minutes to rescue a point. They rolled up their sleeves and had a real go at Carharrack and were rewarded when Adam Webber completed his hat-trick with a 20-yard screamer of a volley.

And with only minutes left Trevenson mustered another attack and Webber was again in the right place to slot home the winner with his fourth goal of the game.

Trevenson Vipers 1 Newquay AFC 0

The Vipers hosted Newquay knowing that a win was required to stay in contention for the league.

And they got off to the perfect start with a goal in the first 30 seconds when the ball was bundled over the line by Jordan Hale.

Newquay, stunned by the early goal, continued to press but the Vipers held firm.

In the second half, Newquay applied a lot of pressure, but with some excellent keeping from Josh Newell, kept Newquay at bay.

The scoreline was nearly increased when Arron Boyce-Congdon hit the bar and Samuel Thomas missed a couple of chances as the game ended 1-0 to Trevenson which kept them in touch at the top of their league.

Snooker

ILLOGAN BOOST HOPES:

Illogan HI A kept alive any slim hope of winning the league this season with a 5-0 away win against Lanner, who only managed to field four players on the night, writes Terry Kempe.

The result of the week was St Day winning 4-1 at home to Penponds and they were unlucky not to make it a 5-0 whitewash. Keith Hosking was Penponds only winner on the night.

In the Redruth Rail derby battle, the B side came out surprising 4-1 winners. Darren Murrish played really well for the B side. Jason Kempthorne was the A side's only winner.

Illogan HI B won 3-2 at home to Playing Place. Richard May beat Phil Davey, Connor Arthur beat Dave Hewitt and Maurice Hicks beat Martin Bawden. Thornton Crawford and Jamie Macquish replied for Place.

Breage won 3-2 at home to St Rumons after being 2-0 down. Roy Good had a good win against Rob Charman for Breage and Carl Mitchell played well to defeat Ryan Gilbert.

Illogan HI C lost 3-2 at home to Godolphin Club. Ant Connor made a 38 break and Chris Timmins knocked in the highest break of the week with a good 58. Darren Jenkin and Victor Wills were the winners for Illogan.

DIVISION 2

Park Bottom continued their recent good form with a good 5-0 home win over Radnor although they did manage to win three close frames.

Camborne Conservative B went down 4-1 at home to St Day A. Dave Harrington was the Con's only winner.

St Day B won 3-2 at home to Camborne Conservative A. Aiden Johns made a 30 break in his frame for St Day.

Ronnie Matthews and Mike Johns were the other winners for St Day.

Alastair Gay kept up his good form winning again for the Cons and making it 13 wins a row for his self! Mark Williams was the Con's other winner.

Penponds lost to in-form Four Lanes 3-2 at home. Richard Gingell, Graham Allen and Andrew Phillips were the winners for Four Lanes. Craig Thomas and Kevin Gill replied for Penponds. Playing Place lost 4-1 at home to Illogan HI. Jamie Macquish was Place's only winner on the night.

Porthleven v Perranporth GC is awaiting a committee decision.

DIVISION 3

Stithians A won 5-0 away to Redruth Rail B which included winning three close frames! Stithians B won 4-1 at home to Redruth Rail A who once again only managed to field four players on the night Julian Knowles was Rail's only winner.

Hideaway Bar lost 3-2 at home to Godolphin Cross. Tim Johnson, A Cunningham and Martin Jeffery were the winners for Cross. Jordan O' Neill made a 25 break in his frame for Hideaway and Wayne Pellow was their other winner.

Four Lanes won 3-2 at home to Playing Place. D Irwin, M Mcmahon and S Draper were the winners for Four Lanes. J Butler and M Searle replied for Place.

Illogan HI and Radnor were the two sides with byes this week.

Football

DEFENSIVE MASTERCLASS:

St Buryan 0 Redruth United 2

St Buryan failed to score in a home match for the first time this season because of the visiting back four of Barry McCabe, Dean Keating, Scott Thomas and Ben Jones plus a man of the match performance by Jason Kitchen.

After 30 minutes of this Dunn Cup quarter final the ball found Keating out on the left touchline who then crossed for Brett Adams to shoot right footed into the net.

The second came five minutes later when Adams on the right touchline passed to the fast running Johnny Jones to chip the keeper.

The expected St Buryan response arrived and Kitchen between the posts stood firm with two excellent stops.

The second half brought no goals, but Adams hit the post and McCabe was tripped in the area but the referee waved away Redruth's claims for a penalty.

Redruth now progress into the semi-finals. There were good midfield shifts put in by Nicky Adams, Dan McInerney, Barry Penfold and Ryan Baber.

Running

SUCCESS FOR HAYLE:

Hayle Runners sent a strong team to run in both the Duchy Marathon and the Duchy 20 mile run on Sunday and celebrated success in both the men's and women's team events.

Hayle Runners women celebrated retaining the team trophy with a strong team performance.

Debbie Harrison led the women home in fourth place overall and second in her 40-44 age group in a time of 3hrs 30 minutes 48 seconds supported by team captain Faye Toms who also won her 35-40 yr age group in a time of 3-34-42.

Helen Rule and Fiona Ruetsch (3rd 45-49 yr age group) took the final two team places in 3-43-53 and 3-45-08 just ahead of Andrea Spencer Smith and Maria Williams.Maria did however win her 50-54 yr age group.

Timothea Cardell won her over 70 age group.

Hayle Runners finished second in the men's team competition just behind St Austell Running Club.Scott Abraham who was 3rd in his 40-44 age group led the team home in 3-01-46 just ahead of Richard Mayes who achieved a personal best in 3-02-09.Simon Timms and Daniel Murrant both had fantastic runs and personal best times in 3-05-32 and 3-8-48 respectively.

Overall there were some tremendous runs with 16 of the clubs members breaking the 4 hour barrier

In the 20 mile race Jon Lowden was first home for Hayle Runners in 2-34-51 ahead of Alex Wall.Charlotte Bennett and Lisa Maskell finished virtually together in 2-42-38

While their colleagues were running in the Duchy Marathon and 20 mile race, a separate team of Hayle Runners set off early on Sunday to compete in the Bideford Half Marathon, and all returned with personal bests.

Hayle's Mike Dowrick, Mel Billington,Val Brennan and Ana Ferguson ran in the half marathon, finishing along the Tarka Trail.

Mike led the Hayle Runners team home in a fantastic time of 1.21.50 followed by Mel in 2.1.23, Ana 2.1.44 and Val in 2.22.44.
