Empty Camborne town centre shops "merely a blip"
THE amount of empty shops in Camborne’s town centre is “merely a blip” and new businesses are looking to set up in the high street, according to a local estate agent.
The town currently has about eight empty premises on Trelowarren Street alone, Camborne’s main shopping hub.
But a partner at Miller Commercial, which owns empty premises in the town centre, said Camborne was generally faring well compared to other Cornish towns.
Mike Nightingale said there was a lot of interest in commercial properties in Camborne and the current empty shops were a result of leases coming to an end.

He said: “There are plenty of for sale and to let boards up at the moment.
“It would seem unusual but going through our records for each premises it appears to simply be a blip whereby several leased on rented premises have come to an end simultaneously and a few other premises on the high street being up for sale.
“On Camborne in more general terms, we can report that its high street has fared better during the recession than many other Cornish towns and has retained a good local customer base.
“We reckon this might be down to the mix of retailers and the fact that there’s no large out of town one stop shopping centre.”
Latest figures revealed nearly half of Camborne businesses have seen an increase, with a further 27.5 per cent saying business remained constant.
George Le Hunte, chairman of Business Improvement District (BID) Camborne, an organisation set up to promote the town, said: “There were plenty of shoppers in Camborne during the Christmas period and footfall looks good now, especially on Saturdays when BID Camborne has continued to fund free parking at both Rosewarne short and long stay car parks on every Saturday in January.”
