A CAMPAIGN has been launched to halt the exodus of people forced to leave their home town in search of work.

Figures show more than 2,100 more people were out of work in the Truro area in 2012 than in 2009.

The new campaign aims to create 1,700 jobs in the city, a target it says is achievable.

Made up of individuals and organisations, the 1700 Jobs For Truro group is working together to exploit and share job opportunities.

Besides producing petitions and flyers, it is raising awareness by getting involved in the Truro and Kenwyn Neighbourhood Plan process and working with large companies looking to invest in the area.

Its supporters include city MP Sarah Newton and Truro city councillor Tom Stubbs, who said he had first-hand experience of the difficulties of finding work in the city.

He had lived in Truro all his life and became one of its youngest city councillors at 26, but was forced to look to Bristol for a job in his chosen field, marketing and PR.

"I searched high and low to find a job that suited my skills here but there just weren't the opportunities available for me to stay," he said.

"Due to our local tourist economy many jobs, even at a base level, are purely seasonal.

"That's not a career, and that's not sustainable. That's why I had to move, even just to secure a temporary role.

"We need to attract new investors now to secure new jobs for the future. We also need a strategic jobs plan."

The 1700 Jobs for Truro Campaign aims to put job creation at the heart of Truro City Council and Kenwyn Parish Council's Neighbourhood Plan, and is working with potential investors including Waitrose and Persimmon Homes.

The campaign's Sophie Napper said: "The only way local people are going to get jobs is for the local community to attract investors to Truro over and above all the other towns out there fighting for them.

"We need to do something strategic; we need to be committed to attracting new investment and new jobs.

"We need a focused council and a focused community."
