Car wedged on steps after St Austell detour goes wrong
A driver was left red-faced when he tried to avoid a blocked St Austell road and ended up wedged on steps from where he needed to be winched by firefighters.
Luckily only the Citroen Xsara Picasso driver’s pride was injured.
He had decided to find a detour after a PCSO directed him to Carnsmerry Crescent because road closures had been put in place due to fallen cables.
The driver crashed down the steps and into a wall.

The accident happened just a stone’s throw from Tremayne Road where firefighters were attending the scene after cables had fallen into the road.
Firefighters were then alerted to the driver’s predicament by a member of the public who was walking down the steps and turned to see the car careering towards him.
Crew manager Tim Lean said they think they tried to use his local knowledge of the street to find a detour and “instead met the steps”.
“ There was not any serious damage to the car but I think his pride was a little bit dented”, added Mr Lean.
Firefighters used a winch to remove the car from the steps.
