Care home shut 'due to late council payments'
THE shock closure of a care home in Hayle in August left 19 elderly patients having to be rehoused with less than two weeks' notice.
The owners of the Millpond View Care Home said they had no option but to shut down because delays to payments from Cornwall Council had left them struggling to pay the high cost of nursing.
The home's 45 staff lost their jobs and said they were devastated for the people in their care, whom they described as like "one big family".
Normal rules demand a 28-day notice period, which would give the authority's social services department more time to find homes for the aged and often vulnerable residents, but owner Joy Lissenburg admitted that could not be fulfilled, claiming they had no choice.

She warned that other care homes faced similar problems and could end up in the same situation if Cornwall Council did not help with the rising cost of social care.
It was announced that a buyer had been found for the home, but too late to save it from closing on August 7.
