Cathedral green to host world title wrestling bout
Two events get to the root of Cornish culture in Truro this month, with a Cornish wrestling tournament and annual Crying the Neck ceremony on the same day.
Truro Old Cornwall Society will present the city's Cornish wrestling event on Cathedral Green from 10.30am on Saturday September 15. Among a range of competitions, the World Light Heavyweight Championship will be contested.
At the same time, Cornish poet, linguist and crier, Pol Hodge, will celebrate Crying the Neck on Lemon Quay. An ancient ceremony to recognise Harvest Home, it is regularly cried across fields throughout Cornwall at this time of year. Pol will cry the neck every half hour between 10am and 12.30pm.

Truro Old Cornwall Society secretary and recorder, Christine Parnell, added: "Truro has been a centre for wrasslin for centuries and the tournament has become part of the regular calendar. We very much welcome the competitions that feature young people because this is both an introduction to their rich heritage and an excellent way to keep fit."
The OCS, with its commitment to "gathering the fragments", recently discovered photographs of the tournament which are believed to date from the 1930s. As well as the Truro event on September 15, Helston will be holding its annual Cornish wrestling tournament this Saturday in the town's Sunken Garden from 2pm, when the Cornish Middleweight Championship and Cornish Under 16 Championship, along with open and junior classes, will be contested.
