Celebrate the Festival of Archaeology at Royal Cornwall Museum
DURING July the Royal Cornwall Museum is celebrating this year’s national Festival of Archaeology with lots of activities suitable for all ages and levels of interest.
Kicking off with a Digging up the Past family day on July 13, families are invited to drop in to try out a range of different archaeological activities, from slate incising to digging up and handling real archaeological finds. The day will also see the launch of the latest new family activity in the Unwrapping the Past Gallery where you become an archaeologist, take your trowel and discover wonderful objects from the ancient worlds of Egypt, Greece and Rome. No need to book, just turn up and have a go. On July 18 Anna Tyacke, finds liaison officer for the Portable Antiquities Scheme, will give a free lunchtime talk, Recent Archaeological Finds in Cornwall. This is to complement the display of recent acquisitions and local finds which can be seen at the Museum until the end of the month. As places are limited, booking is essential and usual museum admission applies.
On July 25 there will be a special evening talk by artist Kurt Jackson, The St Just Bull: the significance of an ancient discovery in Cornwall for a contemporary artist.
The bull is on display in the Unwrapping the Past gallery at the museum and was featured last year, with Kurt Jackson, in the BBC Programme Inside Out. This event is ticketed at £7 or £5 for Members of The Royal Institution of Cornwall and again places are limited so pre-booking is strongly advised.
