BODMIN is celebrating the 30th anniversary of twinning with the French town of Le Relecq Kerhuon.

Last week, about 40 adults and children crossed the English Channel to enjoy big celebrations in Bodmin.

They were joined by the mayor of Le Relecq Kerhuon, Yohan Nedelec and his consort Dina Venezia and started the visit by attending the Bodmin mayor-making ceremony where Bob Micek was sworn in for the second year.

The rest of the trip was spent touring Boscastle, Padstow and dinner at each other's houses so that the French visitors could get a real feel for all things Cornish.

On Friday evening there was a drinks reception hosted by Bodmin Town Council in the Shire Hall, where there was an exhibition of art, photographs and pottery by local artists, together with memorabilia collected by the Bodmin Twinning Association over the past three decades.

Afterwards, there was an energetic dinner and dance in the Public Rooms with food provided by Barnet Fare and music by Mike Haywood.

A special commemorative booklet covering the history of the 30-year twinning has also been produced by the Bodmin members.

It is written in both English and French and was given to every family as a souvenir. Copies are also available in Bodmin Library and the council offices for anyone who wishes to collect one.

One of the Bodmin Twinning Association's founder members, Di Goom, said: "It was a really successful event. Everyone had a wonderful time and we crammed so much in during the few days of the visit.

"We are very proud that the association continues to be so strong and to think it was started all those years ago by someone from Le Relecq Kerhuon walking into Bodmin council offices while on holiday and suggesting it.

"Friday night's dinner was a particular success; the French loved the Public Rooms, the food and the dancing.

"Before they left we just had enough time to take them to a supermarket so they could take home some British goodies."
