THE BISHOP of Truro will be taking part in the celebrations for St Piran’s Day this weekend.

The Rt Rev Tim Thornton was enthroned on Cornwall’s patron saint’s day 12 months ago and this year he will be at Perranporth tomorrow evening to welcome the life size statue of St Piran when it is brought in from the sea.

The children at Perranporth School have been rehearsing the Perran Furry Dance and will be ready to take to the streets of the town dressed as miners and bal maidens.

The musicians Baggas Crowd and The Horners will lead the procession, which begins on the promenade at 6pm.

The statue will be greeted by giant figures representing miners and fishermen who will join in with the Furry Dance as St Piran is paraded through the town.

The street celebrations will culminate at the Memorial Hall in Wheal Leisure where a Noz Lowen (Happy Night) will be held.

Truro Cathedral will be the venue for a feast of music tomorrow at 7.30 pm. Truro Cathedral Choir and the City of Truro Male Choir have combined for a concert for people of all musical tastes.

The Cathedral Choir will perform Allegri’s iconic Miserere with one of the boy choristers singing its infamous solo part which soars several times to a top C. Amongst other items will be a setting of the Lord’s Prayer in Cornish, Pader an Arleth, by Helston-born composer Russell Pascoe and Hymn to St Cecilia by Benjamin Britten.

The City of Truro Male Choir will perform a varied programme to include favorites such as An Rosen Wyn (The White Rose), Proper Job and Caccini’s Ave Maria arranged by the choir’s own accompanist, Martin Davies. Musical director Paul Triggs said: “We are looking forward to both choirs joining forces at the end to raise the roof with a new arrangement of Trelawny.”

Tickets are available for £12 from The Hall for Cornwall box office, tel: 01872 262466 or www.hallforcornwall.co.uk.

A pre-concert St Piran’s Day supper is available from the Cathedral Restaurant (£12.95 for 2-course and £14.95 for 3-course) with special dishes featuring the best of Cornish produce. Pre-booking is essential on 01872 245011.

The annual pilgrimage through the dunes at Perranporth, passing St Piran’s Oratory and ending at the old church ruins, is at 2pm on Sunday.

The St Piran Play, performed by people of the parish, will depict the legend of St Piran and his influence on Cornwall today.
