Champion smashes Yacht Inn race record
IN A summer where record-breaking sporting achievements have been high profile news, it is fitting that the Yacht Inn Swim saw its race record tumble last Friday.
Reigning champion Grant Quigley smashed the 1,300m Newlyn to Penzance course record by almost a minute in the swim, which has enjoyed a growing profile in recent years.

Quigley, who travelled down from Manchester for the swim, pipped previous record holder Neil Eddy to first place with a time of 14 minutes 33 seconds.
Eddy also beat his now old course record, 15 minutes 24 seconds, by a second and later wrote on Twitter: "Yacht inn swim done (newlyn to pz). Happy with 2nd, think I was following Michael Phelps."

The outstanding performances were praised by race organiser Nick Brooks, who oversaw the race in which more than 400 swimmers took part.
He said: "After all the bad weather we received this summer, the sea conditions were excellent. The swim was well attended, considering all the problems which went our way.
"The staff cover from Penzance canoe club and the RNLI and a couple of local boat owners was the best we've had.
"The standard is improving every year and it's becoming very much a sought-after title.
"I'd also like to thank all the volunteers who helped out this year."
The race, which was originally set for August 17, was re-scheduled due to poor weather and, as a consequence, race numbers were down on the year before.
However, Mr Brooks was delighted with the money raised by the participants for Macmillan Cancer Support – thought to be more than £1,500. He added the total did not include further money raised individually by competitors Jenna Woolcock and Talor Elliot from the Porthmeor Beach Café and a pound for pound commitment, up to a set value, by Barclays Bank.
