Changes planned for death crash site
IMPROVEMENTS will be made to a notorious accident blackspot in Newlyn which claimed the life of a grandfather last Christmas.
Cornwall Council Highways will increase signage and remove an old tree stump at the Newlyn Coombe crossroads on which Philip Slimmons died in an accident in 2011.

Improvements will be made to the Newlyn Coombe crossroads, the site of a fatal accident at Christmas, 2011.
The 59-year-old was hit side on by a car approaching the crossroads from Newlyn, the driver of which said he had not seen a stop sign as he approached the junction.
Locals have long sought to make alterations to the junction which crosses the busy A30, with many reports of near misses before the fatality 12 months ago.

Improvements
Immediately following the accident white lines leading up to the junction were repainted, but following a site meeting involving county councillors Roger Harding and Bill Maddern and Cornwall Council representatives it was decided further improvements should be made.
Adrian Roberts, Cormac safety engineer, who was present at the meeting, said the changes were intended to improve visibility and make the approach to the junction from Newlyn clearer.
He said: "The accident which occurred was pretty much a one off. But as far as we are concerned somebody has driven straight across the crossroads without seeing it."
Other issues that were raised included introducing a speed limit on the A30 going through the junction.
Mr Roberts ruled out the introduction of a roundabout on the site due to the nature of the road.
Mr Harding, who previously started a petition to lower the A30 speed limit, said: "It is good to see that there is a positive desire to try and improve the safety of these crossroads "
Mr Maddern agreed, adding: "It's one of those, there's going to have to be something done, it's a rather dangerous crossroads."

“Having lived in Newlyn Coombe for the past 25 years, I do not use this crossroads during the summer months at all, they are just to dangerous, lorries exiting Newlyn also will not use this junction and travel along the Prom to join the A30. The crossroads are just to close too a blind bend coming from Lands End, imposing a speed limit will not reduce the danger on its own. Newlyn Coombe needs to be rerouted to join the A30 further away from the bend or the bend needs to be taken out or reduced.”
