The diagnosis of breast cancer at the Westcountry's largest hospital will become more accurate as a result of a new technique and upgraded technology.

The Primrose Breast Care Centre at Plymouth's Derriford Hospital will be one of the first in the country to install the three-dimensional digital upgrade to one of its Siemens X-ray machines.

The technology provides a set of reconstructed images which can be viewed in layers, enhancing the visualisation of suspected lesions.

Paid for by the Primrose Foundation charity and sponsorship from Siemens, it has the potential to improve early detection, allow for more accurate diagnosis and fewer false alarms.

Consultant radiologist Dr Gareth Porter said: "We are pleased to be one of the first trusts to support this new technology which will help us to improve the quality of the service we provide to our patients at a time we recognise can be very stressful. Without the support of the Primrose Foundation we would not be in the fortunate position to develop the clinical research that will help shape future clinical practice further improving the care of women with breast problems."
