"WHAT about April?" That was the question I was asked as we were knocking on the doors of our neighbourhood with our churches introduction pack.

The Christian knows that God is all-powerful, all-seeing and all-knowing, so how do we respond when these terrible things happen and people ask us difficult questions?

A quick glib theological answer is not always the right way to respond. You have to ask yourself: "Why is this person asking this? Is there some suffering in their family that has caused them to wonder?"

After an arrow prayer, my answer was: "You have to admit that no matter what you believe or think, there are evil people and wickedness in the world."

A married couple in their early sixties were out celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary in a romantic restaurant.

Suddenly a fairy appeared and said: "For being such an exemplary couple and for being faithful to each other over the years I will grant you each a wish."

The wife said: "Oh, I want to see the world with my darling husband." The fairy waved her wand, saying: "Abracadabra." Two tickets for the QE2 liner appeared in her hands.

The husband responded saying: "This is all very romantic, but an opportunity like this only comes once in a lifetime so my wish is to have a wife 30 years younger than me." The fairy and his wife were deeply disappointed, but a wish is a wish. "Abracadabra," the fairy said, and the husband became 92 years old.

Much of the suffering in the world is caused by man's inhumanity to man and the choices that we make. We all demand our right to choose, and when things go wrong we blame God.

Of course God could eliminate all evil and wickedness right now but where would that leave you and me? I'm sure, like me, you have done or said things that are not always right, good or perfect.

The Bible says the Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Perhaps He is still waiting for you to receive His forgiveness before we all stand before His judgement seat.
