Tree sculpture celebrates links with the sea
AN ICONIC tree in Newquay that had to be chopped down for safety reasons now lives on as a sculpture created by a lecturer and his students.
The Monterey Cypress pine in the drive of Belushi's Bar was over 43 feet tall and was estimated to be between 110 and 125 years old. After a limb weighing two and a half tonnes fell from the tree, Cornwall Council lifted the preservation order on it and it was ordered to be taken down. The remaining stump has now been made into a piece of art.

Mayor of Newquay, Kevin Towill, unveils the new sculpture with its creators from Truro College.
Reece Ingram, a lecturer at Truro and Penwith College and a professional sculptor, led the project, which featured wood-carving by art and design students Sam Golley, Amos Bradunas, Rebecca Murton and Freja Taylor.
The new design represents a wave form and features pilchard fish up its sides, to commemorate Newquay's former pilchard fishing industry and also the town's current links to the sea through surfing.

Sam Golley said: "It was a privilege to work with such a well-known sculptor on such a prominent piece of art."
And Amos Bradunas added: "It was great to try something so unusual and on a scale like this. It was a new challenge."

“Looks like something used to burn virgins, though I doubt any of those pictured would qualify
I know this will be removed”
